All in Told by The Red Dragon

“Are you sure you’ve never seen a night?”

Dragon Father and Dragon Daughter were on their way towards their unfortunate adventure on The Night Planet to catch the Wicked Wizard. But during their flight, as he helmed Bonny’s Revenge, Dragon Father found it hard to believe that Dragon Little had never even experienced a night.

Dragon Little said, complaining, “I already told you.”

Dragon Little jumped on the plank just as Dragon Father jumped to the deck. “What’s night?”

Dragon Father turned around. “What do you mean?”

“What’s night? Is it like a knight with a sword?”

“No. Night, night. That thing that happens after the day. When you sleep.”

“What happens when I sleep?”

“Joy. When the suns go down. What’s the matter with you?”

“Look, Dad, I’m a dragon!”

He looked at her and smiled.

She leapt on the railing and jumped into the air towards the deck, flapping her wings, “I’m Dragon Little! I’m Dragon Little!”

Dragon Father laughed. “You’re almost flying, Joy! Try again!”

She did. “I’m a dragon! I’m a dragon!”

He laughed again.

“You almost had it. One more time! I think this time you will fly!”

Dragon Little was five years old when she freed a goblin.

As Dragon Father had told her in the beginning of their adventure, bad things have been happening in the Land of the Goblins. Evil tyrants have taken over. They killed male and female goblins that they felt threatened their rule, and put their children in prison.

Joy Shelley, the girl I have come to call Dragon Little, was only a few weeks past being four and a half years old when I saw her do something I have never seen her do.

Her father, Justin Shelley, the one I call Dragon Father, had disappeared at the end of another fun adventure. Another prisoner had been added to the villains in the Infinite Prison in the infinite corridor in the belly of Bonny’s Revenge.

Dragon Little sat on the plank and stared glumly at the ocean.

Then, suddenly, she jumped up to a standing position on the plank, and walked back to the deck. She walked down the stairs which led to the Infinite Prison and out of my sight.

I had just rescued Dragon Little without her knowing it was me from being captured by Captain Badass.

Dragon Father had disappeared not long ago after a full day of adventure, which meant that he would only return to his dream in sixteen or seventeen hours. If I were Dragon Little, now back aboard Bonny’s Revenge, outnumbered and without my father, I would run and hide using my faster ship.

But that ist not what Dragon Little did.

But then I saw something.

Dragon Little noticed it before me, and I followed her gaze.

A familiar flying pirate ship emerged from behind the moon, and flew towards Dragon Little.

I perked up, ready to perhaps take action.

It was the pirate ship of Captain Badass, the one villain who was ever able to escape the Infinite Prison, and escape it repeatedly.

Dragon Father was gone for the next sixteen or seventeen hours. She would be unprotected… except for me.

I stood up in my hiding place… but I waited.

“Okay. Climb.” Dragon Father ordered Dragon Little.

They both stood near the mast of Bonny’s Revenge. At the end of the day’s adventure, Dragon Father had promised to show Dragon Little something “really cool”. They had then flown up in Bonny’s Revenge to outer space, and Dragon Father stopped the ship between Earth and the moon.

Dragon Father pointed up, and Dragon Little climbed the mast.

“Great! Now into the crow’s nest!”

Dragon little had begged, demanded, begged, then demanded again to get into the stream and swim. Dragon Father allowed her to do it for only half an hour, while the witches waited in the pub called The Green Dragon. And, yes, I do believe Dragon Father was thinking of me when he created that pub out of nothing.

Now the half hour had passed, and Dragon Father lowered the rope ladder to one side of the river.

“Joy!” he yelled again. She was so engrossed in her game that she hadn’t seemed to hear him.

Dragon Little couldn’t stop jumping up and down once she and Dragon Father emerged from the land of the tooth fairies and back into the deck of Bonny’s Revenge.

“That was awesome that was awesome that was awesome that was awesome!”

Dragon Father looked at her and smiled the way he had the entire day, happy that he could give her such a joyful day.

“Did you see when I bumped into them? Boom!” she mimicked the day’s action on her father, slamming into him.

“Aaaaaaaaaah!” Dragon Little was rolling down the steep cliff dressed in and protected by a giant ball of foamy, padded clothes.

The Tooth Fairy flew above her, and next to the Tooth Fairy was Dragon Father on his jetpack.

This had been the adventure Dragon Little had been waiting for six months for.

“It’s going to be all right, little pirate!” The Tooth Fairy boomed at her with her loud voice. “You are now representing all tooth fairies in a battle of honor!”

“Whaaaaaaaaaat?” Dragon Little’s voice was dropping as she kept dropping.

Dragon Little was already giggling without being able to stop when a clothes rack was brought in for the Tooth Fairy.

I have never seen Dragon Little laugh so much and never seen her unable to stop herself from laughing for so long.

The Tooth Fairy, short and loud and oblivious to the fact that Dragon Little was laughing.

“All right,” she shouted in what was probably her soft voice. “Gotta prepare you for battle. There’s gonna be a lot of bumpiness in this adventure so we need you well-padded.”

Dragon Little nodded, even though I believe she did not understand what the Tooth Fairy meant.

“Let’s dress her up as a CUBE!” The Tooth Fairy boomed.

The Tooth Fairy was short, stout, and very very loud.

“Tooth Fairy,” Dragon Father said, “This is my daughter Joy.”

“Joy the pirate!” she boomed in one of her softest voices. “I’ve been waiting for you for ages!”

She put her strong fingers into each of Joy’s shoulders. “Your father says you’re good in a fight!”

Dragon Little was smiling. “Yes, Miss Fairy.”

“Yeah, but do you bounce?” The Tooth Fairy boomed again.

The Tooth Tree sprouted within a minute.

Dragon Little and Dragon Father looked at it, standing on the barren sand of Tooth Island.

The sprout thickened into a massive vine, multiplied into multiple vines, and all the vines skyrocketed upwards, meshing into each other, jutting out, then getting entangled again, as if in a competition to get higher faster.

A doorway opened in the sky, a bright light and seemingly a tear within the fabric of space.

Tooth Island had not been there, on Earth’s ocean, until Bonny’s Revenge reached it. It was summoned by the dreamer without his knowledge.

They parked Bonny’s Revenge at the edge of the small island. It was a small, barren island.

“Why is this called Tooth Island?” Dragon Little looked around. “There’s nothing here.”

“Do you have your tooth?”

She showed it to him.

“Dig a small hole and bury it.”

Five and a half year old Dragon Little was asleep on the deck, back leaning against the mast, head leaning back.

Her mouth and chin were still showing the dried remains of the little blood that had fallen come out of her mouth when her tooth was knocked out. He let out a small laugh and leaned down next to her.

In her hand, between her fingers, she was holding her tooth.

“Joy, Joy,” he said gently.
