I can see Justin waiting for the exact right second.

It’s been a day for those in the waking world since the kids rode the flying elephants and since Justin decided it was time Joy somehow meet girls her age.

Madelyn appeared first. She rolled down the ramp to the shore of the small island of our small suburban home. After a few nice hellos, we helped her off the wheelchair. On her two arms she went into the sea and began swimming.

“Charlie! Charlie!” Justin calls out.

“Just a second, Joy’s Dad!”

Joy and Charlie pull the flying elephants’ ears softly, then pull the left one only. The elephants slow in mid-air, then make a U-turn to the left. Justin, helming Bonny’s Revenge, stops the warship in mid-air.

“Dad, we’re busy!” Joy says.

Charlie and Joy are riding flying elephants today. Justin helms Bonny’s Revenge next to them, just in case. Master Mind, the dutiful chaperone, as always watches over Joy’s safety, also from Bonny’s Revenge. Suzy and I came to watch. It’s not every day you see your grandchild ride a flying elephant.

Suzy holds my hand tightly and enjoys the view. She loves it when dreams are beautiful.

Two small fairies fly into the arena. I should say the fairies look like male body builders, only tiny and with wings. Justin, Suzy, and I, sitting in the first row, look at each other. Master Mind only looks forward.

One small fairy lands next to Joy, who is now engulfed in a protected padded globe, and the other fairy lands next to Charlie, also inside a padded globe. With a lot of show and hefting of muscles each fairy lifts a padded child above his head and rises into the air.

“PUT THE CHILDREN IN THE CANNONS!” The Tooth Fairy orders again. She is flying above the huge cannons, wand in hand.

At my helpless shouts for help, Justin comes running out of the house.

“Oh my god!” he stops in the pathway leading up to Bonny’s Revenge as soon as he sees Joy and the kids looking at weapons in the weapons cabinet. “Joy! No weapons! No one touch the weapons!”

Angela comes out running.

“Justin, what’s–Holy shit! Dad, Mom, there’s a huge ship parked outside your house!”

He docked the ship right outside one of the suns, and Master Mind went to check, quickly returning with Amahle.

“But even though I forgot my dream, my heart was pumping! I felt I had a great inspiration! There was music inside me. And I was certain I could feel what the color blue was, even though I knew I’d never seen it.”

“What?” Justin says. “Really?”

“You could see blue in the waking world?” Charlie asks, just as surprised.

I hardly have enough time to register that Amahle had accidentally dragged Joy underwater. Joy! I think, as Suzy gasps, and Master Mind from the deck of Bonny’s Revenge exclaims “By my evil maker!”

My mind registers too slowly that Amahle does not need to breathe in the Dream, while Joy does. Master Mind leaps off the deck, but even while he’s in the air, something even crazier happens.

The top of Joy’s sword appears above the water. As it moves up, it brings with it Amahle’s back. The sword is coming out of Amahle’s back.

Another split-second and Joy’s head emerges. Both her hands are on the sword, which she had put right through Amahle’s stomach to come out of the back.

Amahle and Joy stand at the edge of our small island and look out into the infinite ocean.

Justin and Charlie haven’t arrived yet on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge.

Suzy and I watch silently from the porch while Master Mind is standing guard on the docked ship. I, for one, am very interested to see what will happen. It is not like Joy can make Amahle gain her sight for the first time in her life. That’s impossible.

And yet…

Amahle sits down on the deck and Joy sits cross-legged beside her. Amahle practices ‘looking’ at the orange sun, with Joy holding her hand.

When it becomes clear that this is going to be Amahle’s and Joy’s day, and that Justin is going to remain with Joy, Colin and Yumio each go to their own dreams. Madelyn goes elsewhere in Justin’s dream to dream about whatever she wants to.

Suzy, Master Mind and I remain on the deck.

Justin joins us in looking at them from the opposite railing, as we watch the two try out different things.

The setting sun Amahle has summoned moves right and left. Amahle shakes her head.

“She didn’t see movement,” I tell Justin and Suzy.

“Nope,” Justin says.

After all the congratulations and the happiness at Amahle’s news, Madelyn wakes up and disappears. Immediately afterwards, Amahle disappears.

Justin puts his hand around Joy’s shoulders, “How was the Girls’ Night, Joy?” he asks with a smile.

“It was fun! Amahle let me taste a little bit of something called ‘Liquer’.”

“Oh, yeah?”

“Just a little bit!”

“How was it?”

“I spit it out!”

Justin laughs.

The music that fills the dream feels drunker and drunker as the hours pass. I didn’t know if people can get drunk in the dream, but from the music that comes from Amahle’s head, it certainly sounds like it.

Eventually, the limo returns to park right next to our island.

The limo driver takes Madelyn out and places her on the wheelchair that appears on our island next to him. Amahle steps out with Elvis. Suzy is after her.

But Joy doesn’t come out.

We are back on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge.

Joy and Justin are both clearly shaken by their conversation with the First Prisoner or The Guardian Spirit, or whoever he really is.

Justin stares at the horizon from behind the wheel, as he takes the ship out. Joy stands by his side, staring forward as well.

After a couple of minutes, as we fly past the clouds and into outer space, Joy hugs Justin. Justin stops the ship in mid-space and hugs her back.

“Red is not dead,” Joy says.

“No, she’s not.” He hugs her and doesn’t let go.

“She’s not a creature of the Dream.”

Justin sighs. “Okay. Okay. Let’s all calm down, okay? This is a tough day. Amahle, you’ve yelled at Joy enough, we’re done with that. We’ll talk about it another day, when everyone’s not so excited.”

“You mean when I’m not so excited,” Amahle says.

“You have had a great tragedy. I don’t know what I would do if that ever…when that ever…” his eyes sneak a look at Suzy.

“I want to talk about it now!” Joy stomps her foot.

Justin stands between Joy and Amahle, his back to Amahle. “No! You can’t talk to her now.”

“Why not!” Joy demands.

“Amahle, uh,” Joy finds it hard to speak. She holds the lion claw necklace in her hand. “When we were in your childhood home, uh…”

“She accidentally made a necklace real,” Justin says, clearly trying to help Joy find a way out.

“What?” Amahle is surprised.

“No, I didn’t!” Joy says aggressively. “It wasn’t an accident! I can control myself! I touched your grandfather’s necklace and made it real. I made it real and then I took it. I just wanted it so bad, and I thought, what’s the harm?”

Amahle’s face shows pain. “I thought you were my friend, Joy. I took you in. I showed you my past. I wake up in your world every day because we’re friends.”

“We are friends!” Joy looks down.

“Friends don’t steal!” Amahle explodes angrily.

“This is the assegai,” Amahle says. Standing in the middle of Suzy’s and mine living room, an assegai spear appears in her hands. It is tall. I have never seen one so close.

“Wowwwww!” Joy whispers in awe. “What a weapon!”

“Don’t touch, Joy!” Suzy says as Joy leans in.

“I’m just watching from close by! I’m not touching it!”

Suzy shakes her head. “She’s so cute. She’s so beautiful. But look at her, she only grows wilder with every year.”

I nod. “She can’t be tamed.”

Suzy throws me a look. “I don’t like that word. That's not a word you use on people.” Then she nods, “You’re right, though. She can’t.”

“I don’t think she should, Suzy,” I tell her. “She would never survive the Dream outside if she was tame.”

Suzy sighs.

“Now, take in all that you’ve learned, and forget about it. This is a way that people behave. It’s a way to express yourself. It’s not for kids yet. But I think you needed to know about this, Joy. Okay?”

“Those were stupid curses anyway,” Joy says. “What’s the point?”

“I’m not going to do anything that man told me,” Charlie says as we leave the house and walk towards Charlie’s elevator.

“Why not?”

“He said he’s teaching us words because we must not listen to The Man. But my Kwa’a says the White Man always used nice words to tell us how he’s with us, and the White Man always backstabs.”

Justin looks at him. “That’s a good point. That’s very true.”

Charlie shrugs. “I’m not sure. My mom hates everything he says about the White man. But I don’t like Sam anyway. He’s a liar.”

The Justin in front of my eyes disappears, and Sandra runs to Justin and hugs him.

“Hey, honey, welcome back!”

She stands on her tiptoes and kisses him on the lips and he kisses her back.

Oh, my! I see Suzy look at the kiss with eyes wide open.

“Yuck!” Luis and Joy say together.

Justin straightens and looks around. “Joy, come here!”

Joy runs to him and leaps on him. He lifts her up and hugs her. She hugs him like she hasn’t seen him in years.

“Oh, my god,” Justin says. “You survived! Thank god! It must have been so awful for you! All alone!”
