After all the congratulations and the happiness at Amahle’s news, Madelyn wakes up and disappears. Immediately afterwards, Amahle disappears.
Justin puts his hand around Joy’s shoulders, “How was the Girls’ Night, Joy?” he asks with a smile.
“It was fun! Amahle let me taste a little bit of something called ‘Liquer’.”
“Oh, yeah?”
“Just a little bit!”
“How was it?”
“I spit it out!”
Justin laughs.
“But it was sweet!”
“I’m sure.”
“What’s that noise?” Joy notices the noise first. Justin and I listen.
“It’s Suzy,” I laugh.
I look through the window and into the living room. Suzy’s asleep on the sofa.
As a rule, Suzy and I don’t need to sleep in Justin’s dream. We’re dreams. But whenever Suzy goes on an adventure or participates in someone’s dream, she does fall asleep for a little while. And often, she snores. Her snoring is quite loud.
Joy climbs the window and enters the living room. Her eyes are wide open in shock at her grandmother’s decibel levels.
“Do I snore like that?” she whispers.
“You just do,” Justin says and then mimics her soft snoring.
“I do not snore!” she whispers back.
She puts her ears to Suzy’s nose as she snores.
“How can a nose make a sound like that?”
I feel they’re making fun of Suzy too much. “Come on, Joy, let Suzy sleep.”
Suddenly, Suzy lets out a snore that is so similar to a buzzsaw sound, you could never tell the two apart.
Joy, Justin and I break out laughing.
Suzy opens her eyes. “Sweetheart,” she says. “Don’t come in through the window.”
She closes her eyes and begins to snore again.
Justin whispers to me, “How does she do that every time? She was asleep!”
I shake my head. That’s been one of the big mysteries of my life.
