At my helpless shouts for help, Justin comes running out of the house.

“Oh my god!” he stops in the pathway leading up to Bonny’s Revenge as soon as he sees Joy and the kids looking at weapons in the weapons cabinet. “Joy! No weapons! No one touch the weapons!”

Angela comes out running.

“Justin, what’s–Holy shit! Dad, Mom, there’s a huge ship parked outside your house!”

Joy’s face grows red a bit. Her games, the ones famously confiscated during the lava god adventure, are not, uh, for kids. Suddenly, her face lights up. “I have a pirate ship!”

“No you don’t!” Tommy says immediately.

“Yuh-huh, she does!” Charlie helps.

“Wanna see?”

“You don’t!”

“Want to see my pirate ship, Grace?” Joy asks her.

We are on an island Justin created for this purpose, in the middle of the ocean in his dream. Bonny’s Revenge is docked to the side. Master Mind remains on the deck. He is always ready to leap into action, but with two dreamers protecting Joy, there’s probably not going to be a need. Quite possibly, it’s more likely he’ll protect Suzy and me. We stand right next to him, just in case.

“Ready,” Amahle says.

“Ready,” Justin says, fists tightening.

Charlie looks around helplessly as one of the dark creatures attempts to grab Joy.

Joy leaps out of the way, but it was close.

Joy’s weapon needs to recharge. Justin, whose dreams these are, is an obsessed dreamer and can’t snap out of it. And Master Mind’s weapons aren’t working on them.

Charlie raises his hand as if about to conjure something as a dreamer. But he doesn’t. His mind is clearly a blank.

Master Mind leaps at one of the creatures now flying above the ship, who is trying to grab Joy. He grabs the bottom of its taloned leg and is now rising into the air with the creature.

“I’m sooooo glad you stayed!” Joy is at full energy having just woken up. She raises her hands and looks at them. “This is awesome! Ooh, did you see my toys?!” Joy points excitedly at her...um… fighter spaceship toys, legos that build a cloud, then more war toys. “I got them as a gift from a lava monster after I defeated ninja pirates!”

I nod, not knowing what to say. Next to me, I see Suzy is doing the same. Although she no doubt does know what to say and is trying very hard not to say it.

Suzy and I climb aboard the ship. Joy is still asleep. Justin is still awake.

As we climb up the ramp, she points at the three very big cannons that are jutting out from the side.

I nod. “They are prepared for war,” I say.

We make it to the top and go on the deck.

Everything’s made out of wood: The floor of the deck, the railing, the cabin, the other cabin-looking thing next to the cabin, the stair leading up to the wheel, the wheel, and mast, and the crow’s nest far above it.

“My god,” she says. “This is where they live.”

Season 2 begins! Joy is older!

My name is Walter, Walter Shelley.

I am standing on a small grassy island, looking at a huge wooden pirate ship docked right in front of me. My son has named it Bonny’s Revenge.

This has never happened before in my life. But it’s absolutely normal.

Behind me is my apartment. My nice, little, comfortable, fully-paid-for apartment, which is actually in Toronto, Canada. It’s also here, an exact replica, in the middle of a small island, in the middle of an ocean, under two suns, in the middle of my son’s dream.

Real adventure, real villains are dangerous. I know more than others, for I have seen many deaths of my fellow dragons, many deaths of dreams, and many humans die while dreaming.

But adventure in Dragon Father’s dreams are fun. Sometimes Dragon Father finds ways to make the adventure even more fun.

“Morning good, Joy!” Dragon Father woke his daughter up cheerfully in her cabin.

“Hold it, hold it!” Five and a half year old Dragon Little raised her hand. She was armed as usual with a laser pistol on one side of her belt and a sword on the other. “Before we start the battle, I have one question.”

“Yessssss?” the Lord of the Flies whispered menacingly.

“You guys have jokes, right?”

“Of coursssssssse…”

“Okay. Try this. Knock knock.”

In two seconds, I stopped just above the water, my body and wings slightly bigger than their ship, my face mere centimeters from my two favorite people.

“How are you doing, my Dragon Little?” I asked and smiled.

Dragon Little’s smile was even greater. She jumped on my nose and hugged my head. “Red! Red! I missed you!”
