‘The Squashbuckler Diaries’ are the daily tales of Joy Shelley’s Life in the Dream. The ‘Lost in Dreams’ books will tell the story of what happens to her at ages 6, 9, 12, 15, and so on. The diaries tell us what happens before, after, and between the books.

S02E136 Special Delivery

With Justin and Charlie both awake and gone from the dream, it’s time for Master Mind and Joy to do their special delivery to Charlie’s dream. As always, I join them. Just in case something happens. Just in case something should be reported back to Justin.

Joy has gathered on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge ten permanent jetpacks that Charlie has left in Justin’s dream, having used them to come over. Once he’s here, he wakes up from here and the jetpack gets left behind.

So, once a week, Joy and Master Mind bring them back.

Joy, wearing her own jetpack just in case, helms the ship and docks it, as precisely as always, with the plank almost touching the edge of the sun.

“Let’s go!” She jumps on the plank. I still can’t get over how Joy can just jump on a plank that’s kilometers above the ocean without a hint of fear. She goes to the edge of the tunnel. Once in, Master Mind, who is also wearing a jetpack just in case, throws her one of Charlie’s.

She catches it and puts it beside her. He throws another, she catches it, and so on until all the jetpacks are in the tunnel.

Master Mind stands on the plank and offers his hand to me. “Father of Pirate,” he says. “Do not be a slowpoke.”

I take his hand and he helps me reach the tunnel. Walking this high on a wobbly plank still scares every time.

Once inside, Joy and Master Mind take one in each hand. I take just one. And we head out.

Out on the Shroom, Joy looks at the slowly growing nest of fairy flies on the stem of Justin’s Shroom. I say ‘nest’ but that’s just because there’s a lot of them, not because I can see a nest. They’ve just chosen the stem as their home and are constantly on it. Right now there are about two hundred small, glowing thumb-sized fairy flies all around the stem, roughly at the height of Joy’s head.

“Good morning, my fairy flies,” she salutes them. “How are you today?”

“Bzzzz bzzzz!” they buzz, though not, as far as I can see, as a response.

“Want to help us carry the jetpacks to Charlie’s dream?”

“Bzzz bzzzz!”

“Okay,” Joy shrugs. “Let’s go, slowpoke!” she smiles at Master Mind.

“Little Pirate, I would appreciate you calling me a slowpoke only when I poke slowly. I never poke slowly.”

“Okay, slowpoke. Let’s go!”

Master Mind leaps from Justin’s stem to Charlie’s stem, which is about three meters lower and one or two meters in front of us. He lands without a problem. He puts the two jetpacks in the tunnel, and returns to the edge of Charlie’s Shroom.

Joy throws him a jetpack. She’s accurate and he catches it without a problem. He puts it in the tunnel, and the process repeats. When all five jetpacks are done, Joy goes into the tunnel and brings out two more.

When all ten jetpacks are in Charlie’s tunnel, Master Mind pushes them a bit more in and leaves them there. When Charlie appears in his dream and gets on the elevator, he just picks one and flies over.

Master Mind fires up his jetpack and lands on Justin’s Shroom next to Joy.

We all go back in.

Another day, another special delivery.
