‘The Squashbuckler Diaries’ are the daily tales of Joy Shelley’s Life in the Dream. The ‘Lost in Dreams’ books will tell the story of what happens to her at ages 6, 9, 12, 15, and so on. The diaries tell us what happens before, after, and between the books.

#186: In the Land of Giants, Part 3: The Search for Joy

Bonny’s Revenge hung above the forest in the giant’s world. Dragon Father, now visibly panicked, was looking over the wooden railing and calling, “Joy! Joy!” at the forest.

Not only did he not know where she was, he did not know if she was alive or dead.

He ran from side to side futilely, until he spotted Ymir the Giant, who had swatted them in the first place.

Dragon Father’s face twisted.

“Go away!” he said.

Ymir the Giant disappeared.

Dragon Father looked around him at the world of the giants. “Go away!” he said.

The world vanished, but the forest in which Joy lay unconscious did not disappear.

“Go away!” he screamed at the forest.

The forest did not vanish.

“Go away!”

The forest did not vanish.

Dragon Father stood on the railing and the jetpack reappeared on his back.

“I’m coming for you, Joy!” he whispered and leapt off the ship.

With the aid of the jetpack he flew into the giant forest, where everything was ten times higher than what he was used to.

He flew between trees, calling out, “Joy! Joy!”

I could see he was getting farther and farther away from her, but it was clear he was trying to comb the forest systematically.

After an hour of flying of searching he had not yet covered a tenth of the forest.

“Joy! Joy!” he never stopped yelling.

And then, in an instant, he was no longer there. The jetpack and Dragon Father vanished.

He had woken up. This time not out of fear, but perhaps because it was time to wake up, In which case, he would only return in sixteen or so hours.

The forest did not stir, for there was hardly any wind when Dragon Father was not in the dream.

Tomorrow I will tell you what happened next.
