All in Age: 7

Joy helms Bonny’s Revenge.

We sail past the moon, which Joy and Charlie visited only a couple of months ago. We sail past Mars, zoom past the asteroid belt and the solar system.

Joy doesn’t even look aside, checking for a facility that can hold a dragon.

“Joy, you just skipped over a lot of planets,” Suzy tells her.

“She’s not there,” Joy says confidently without looking at Suzy.

Bonny’s Revenge flies faster, until we reach a planet made of metal.

Justin disappears first.

Joy looks at Suzy, then at Charlie.

“I guess it’s morning,” Charlie says calmly, sitting on the sofa. “I’ll wake up early, Joy. I’ll ask my Mom to use the phone when I come back from school. I’ll call him, I promise.”

Joy nods. I have never seen her as speechless as this. She is overwhelmed by whatever may happen once Charlie reaches her father in the waking world and reminds him that he is raising a girl in his dreams.

“See you tomorrow, Joy,” Charlie says.

He looks down, and suddenly he’s gone.

“Wow,” Suzy says, hearing the news.

We are all back in Suzy’s and my apartment on the small island in Justin’s dream. Suzy is the only one of us who does not regularly go on adventures and Justin wanted to do this with her, and rightly so.

We sit in the living room, Suzy, Joy, Justin, and Charlie on the sofas or the chairs. I sit on my Archie Bunker chair. Master Mind stands to the side and does not sit.

“Yeah,” agrees Justin.

“It’s so strange!” Joy says excitedly. “That someone remembers me! It’s soooo strange!”

Joy doesn’t wait for us.

She didn’t want to hear Charlie tell me who Luis is. She didn’t want to experience again, I assume, the feeling of seeing Justin have another child but her. Not that it was an actual child. As Charlie explained to me, Sandra dreamed that she and Justin were married and that they had a child called Luis. He wasn’t a real child, but a child in the dream. And yet, Joy is a child in the Dream, and whether she came from a dream or not, she is real and human and Luis is not.

Joy separates from Charlie and turns to me. “We have to tell Dad!” she says.

I run scenarios in my head. She’s right. We should tell Justin that Charlie can remember her outside the dream. But he’s on his private and secret romantic time with some dreamer. Do we wait? Do we tell him now? What should we do? No. She’s right. We shouldn’t wait with this news. “Let’s go now. Kids, get into your regular clothes.”

Charlie looks down at himself and he’s back to wearing jeans and his favorite T-shirt with the condor on it.

“No fair!” Joy says.

Joy and Charlie keep playing in the beach sand with their toys for another minute, when Charlie says, “You know, it’s hard to convince people with words, Joy.”

He had just been talking about how, when he grows up, he wants to use words to explain to people how bad the Hopi have been treated.

“Yeah?” She’s immersed in the game, holding a rake in her right hand, and paving a way towards their sand castle.

“Yeah. I keep telling people you’re real and no one believes me.”

Today Joy decides to play in Charlie’s dream. Justin is off to his secret dream that we’re not supposed to visit but that everyone has figured out he has his dream girlfriend in.

So he left Joy in Master Mind’s care. Master Mind is always ready to leap into action and save Joy from the unexpected dangers of a dream. I join because I want to see as much as possible of my granddaughter for the two of me.

I have seen Justin try to stay away from danger while at the same time teach Joy how to handle it, knowing it is unavoidable as she lives in other people’s dreams.

But this? Walking back to the dream of a man who kills people in his dream and strips them of their souls? A man who dreams he is an agent of God?

I trust Justin, but I’m also afraid. Joy knows to be afraid, but is excited by whatever it is he has planned. Master Mind follows us silently and has already proven he will sacrifice himself to protect Joy.

This is, indeed, Hell. The ground is made of infinite fires, where in other dreams there would be ground or in Justin’s dream - an ocean. A pillar of fire stretches high and moves slowly. Hundreds of winged demons fly around.

Joy points quietly. There, right there, is Angel Chrysalis - an angel with wings of fire. We do not know what his name is in the real world. We only know what he called himself here.

Angel Chrysalis has a human woman stand in front of him on a floating rock.

He speaks to her and she screams.

Joy is exhausted. Charlie vanished, waking up, only after a few minutes. If he’d returned to sleep, he hadn’t returned to Justin’s dream.

“Take a break, everyone!” Justin says, and we all find a spot to sit and rest.

“Darling,” Suzie sits near Justin. “What happened in your life that got you to dream such an awful dream?”

Hmm. I hadn’t thought of that.

Justin gives it some thought. He hadn’t thought of it, either. “I don’t want to talk about it, Mom.”

“I could see the zombies were about to get Grandma’s and Grandpa’s island!”

We’re heading down to the island which is the place of Suzy’s and my home in Justin’s dream. Joy is describing to Charlie how she survived.

“I went into the house. I knew that zombies weren’t that smart. I knew my weapons wouldn’t be enough. And I knew that ovens keep their smell inside.”

“So what’d you do?” he asks her wide-eyed.

The four of us - Suzy, Master Mind, Joy, and I - all sit and stand in the tunnel for hours as Justin fights zombies below.

Master Mind and Joy are on the edge, looking down at the battle.

Justin keeps being overrun by more and more zombies, then kills them, then new zombies come, and so on endlessly.

Suddenly, hours in, the fighting stops and Justin looks around.

Joy sits up, more alert.

I look down with bated breath. The little island is being overrun by zombies while Master Mind is speeding towards it with his jetpack. Joy, who was right there, can’t be seen anywhere. Justin, still obsessed, is fighting the zombies on Bonnie’s Revenge, which is now approaching the grey castle. He doesn’t know Joy is in trouble, and in his present state, he doesn’t seem to care.

The zombies below break into our home through the door and the windows. If Joy is there, I don’t see how she can survive. All she has are the laser pistol and the sword which she wears on her belt.

Master Mind lands in our garden and sprays dozens of zombies with bullets, all aimed at their heads.

Zombies fall, but I can’t see Joy’s small, blonde head from above.

Some of the zombies throw their fellow zombies upwards to grab at the hull of Bonny’s Revenge, which is flying just meters above them. Justin is screaming something at them, but I can’t hear what. He is obsessed by his dream, just like Joy said.

Even as the zombies crawl up the hull, Master Mind leaps off the deck and jumps hundreds of meters back to our island. I can’t believe he can do that.

Master Mind lands accurately next to me.

“There was only one jetpack, Little Pirate,” he hands it to her. “Save yourself.”

It’s been a few weeks since Joy’s seventh birthday and Justin appears on the deck of Bonnie’s Revenge.

Joy is on the island with Suzy and me. Master Mind is on the ship.

“Justin!” Suzy calls out to him. “We need your advice on something.”

Justin goes to the ship’s wheel as if he hadn’t heard his mother.

Land appears in front of the island and, in its center and not too far away from us, sits a grey castle.

I was frantic with worry. Justin had just fallen into the depths of the abyss of the Dream. He had fallen so much in-between millions of Shrooms, that I couldn’t see him anymore.

“Justin! Justin!” I shout after him.

“Grampa! Grampa!” I feel Joy’s hand take mine.

I look at her. “Joy, he could be dead or--”

“Grampa, Grampa, he’s fine. He’s fine.”

“Justin!” I shout the second Justin appears on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge.

It’s only been a few minutes since I’d given up trying to cross the plank from the edge of the sun to Bonny’s Revenge.

He looks up immediately.

“The kids have gone off to another dream!” I shout. “They left Master Mind on the island.”

“Jesus Christ,” he says. A jetpack appears on his back.
