S02E135: Dressing Up
Charlie comes over from his dream, using one of his permanent jetpacks, and lands on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge. He’s early. Joy isn’t up yet and Justin hasn’t appeared, either.
Suzy and I are sitting in lawn chairs in our garden, looking out. Master Mind is near the wheel.
I look at Suzy lazily. I gesture at the ship with my head, saying, ‘should we join them?’
Suzy shrugs. Neither of us is in a mood to move and there’s no good reason to.
After a few minutes, Charlie and Joy come running out of her cabin and down the ramp into our small island.
“Grandma,” Joy is excited. “We’re going to play dress-up! I’m going to try on one of your dresses! Charlie’s going to try your shirt and pants, Grampa! It’s going to be soooo funny!”
“Oooh, okay,” Suzy nods.
“Ah, sure,” I say. Worst case, Justin will create new clothes for us.
“Oh! Charlie! Maybe we’ll do it the other way. I’ll wear Grampa’s clothes and you wear Grandma’s dress!”
Charlie’s smile disappears. “No, no. I don’t want to.”
“It’ll be funny!”
Charlie shakes his head vehemently. “We don’t do that. I don’t do that.”
“Charlie! You’re no fun!”
He turns his back. “Let’s play something else.”
“Okay, okay!” Joy is exasperated, as if Charlie has been trying to convince her without stop for hours and she eventually gave in. “I’ll wear the dress! That’s also funny!”
Charlie nods, his smile returning, and the two run into the house.
They run into the house and Suzy and I just sit and enjoy the silence.
The silence is broken after a few moments when Joy and Charlie come out, dressed in clothes that are almost twice their size.
Suzy breaks into laughter. Joy pulls out an imaginary sword and fakes a fight while wearing a dress. “A-ha! Take that, villain!” And of course she falls all over herself.
Charlie’s legs haven’t gone all the way through, so he’s constantly walking on the pants and dragging half of them behind. He’s holding up the belt so that his pants don't fall even as my shirt covers most of his body. “I’m Walter Shelley!” Charlie tries to be funny. “I’m a grandpa!”
I laugh at the effort. It’s nice to see them have fun.
Then Suzy notices something. “Joy, why is your hair so wet? And come here. Your neck and shoulders are drenched in water! What’s--”
As Joy steps closer, we both smell what happened and my head shoots back.
“Oof!” Suzy says. “Did you pour my perfume all over yourself?”
“Yuh-huh,” Joy says hesitantly, clearly learning that maybe it wasn’t a good thing.
“Oh, boy,” Suzy says. “We’re to talk about how to use perfume.”
“Let’s try their other clothes!” Joy says.
“Yes!”
And Charlie and Joy run into the house while Suzy shakes her head. “She doesn’t know anything about real life,” she says, looking at me.
