“You know what we need, Joy?”
Dragon Father and Dragon Little had spent the first day after Mary’s death on the deck of Bonny’s Revenge, playing games and just talking.
“What?”
“I think we need to say goodbye to Mary.”
He came to his feet and reached out to her. She allowed him to bring her up and hold her.
“Look there! See the island?”
A small island appeared right next to Bonny’s Revenge. It was not much bigger than three Bonny’s Revenges, or my adult dragon body. It was circular and looked like a small hill in the middle of the ocean. It was filled with small, shoddy, unorganized graves. A small wooden cabin stood in the middle of the island, surrounded by graves.
Dragon Little nodded.
“That’s where the funeral is starting in just a few minutes.”
“Fewneal?”
“A funeral is where we say goodbye. I’ll show you. Oh, no!”
Massive plant roots came out of the ground, like octopus hands. They grasped the graves and slithered menacingly.
“Look, Joy, the plant people have taken over the island! Are you ready to stop them so we can say goodbye to Mary?”
The color returned to Dragon Little’s cheeks. “Let’s go!” she said.
A sword appeared in Dragon Father’s left arm. He put Dragon Little down, and threw her a small sword that appeared in his right hand.
“Let’s go, slow poke!” he said.
And thus the battle began!
